Happy New Year

15 lasers turned out for our annual NYD race. Beautiful weather, great close races.

Thanks to John Sawyer for running the races. Thanks to Rick for having us over for

some great fun, chowder and chatter.

Posted the Fall series scores as well as the ocean races from CYC in 2011.

Hear Sterling and Anne are heading to the OCR to do some RC work .

Hope to see a big group of CYC 'ers at the SAYRA convention in Hilton Head.

Laser Sailors,

Mother Nature served us up a perfect day for Laser Racing on New Years day! Temperatures in the upper 60’s and winds in the 8 to 14 knot range with plenty of sunshine. Many thanks to John Sawyer who singlehandedly ran 8 short races back to back, resetting the start and finish line in every race. Also thanks to Rick and JoAnne Campbell for hosting everyone for dinner and drinks at their house afterward.

We had 15 Lasers on the line for 8 races. Close racing with lots of traffic at the mark rounding’s and close finishes. One race, I saw 9 boats finish overlapped. At the end of the day counting one throw out, Martin and Glen were tied with 13 points each with Martin getting the nod based on 3 firsts to Glens 2 firsts. Third with 3 firsts, but not as consistent was Greg Zack with 29 points, followed closely by First Junior, Daniel Birmingham. Rounding out the top 5 and First Radial was Parks Blair.

Chip Till is competing with the big dogs in his new Melges 20 in Florida this winter.

Had a great time in Columbia this weekend. Great breeze on Saturday - but cold. Lesson for the day : dont get new gloves and a new mainsheet on raceday when its blowing.

Was great to see the Hassingers schooling the laser fleet. Was great to see Sally Key pick up a fourth overall race 3 on Saturday.

OK, going to try another regatta. Been at least 3 months since in the laser. Going to be blowing near 20 knots tomorrow . Laser is a great boat to take out in a breeze. Just have to handle the autotacks on the lake. Will try to update the Midlands Regatta in Columbia if not too bushed tomorrow.

Had a great night with the Key's. It's the sailors that make sailing fun. Applesauce makes it fun as well.

US Sailing Men's Championship Report

Chip Till, Chris Calhoun, and I had the great experience of sailing in the US Sailing Mens Championships this past weekend. We were fortunate enough to win the Area D elimination event at College of Charleston and were representing the Carolina Yacht Club. The finals were sailed in Ultimate 20s which are a 20 foot sportboat (bowsprit and asymmetric kite), and were able to practice ahead of time thanks to Steve Rose from Columbia Sailing Club.

In the mix of competitors were plenty of different class National and North American champions, college sailing All Americans, and so on. When you primarily sail in one class in one region, it'd easy to forget that there are plenty of other classes spread around the country who have different sailors leading them, and this is one event where many of the best people from different classes come mix it up. I had set pretty reasonable (goal was mid fleet) expectations going into this, and was not disappointed by the competition.

The venue (Lake Norman, NC) provided a variety of tough conditions starting out the lightest on Friday(2-7 knots). We started out slowly, and were able to hang in the good pressure but I just wasn't able to transition through the lulls and holes that would seemingly appear out of nowhere. On Saturday we had a little more breeze, maybe 10 knots, and it started to become clearer that there were periodic oscillations of about 30-50 degrees working their way down the course. Things would go from looking great to looking bad to looking great, and we were still sailing a little bit in a reactive mode, but we had some good looks and lead at a couple of marks. By Sunday, with the breeze coming up a little more (6-15), we were more in our element and attacking the fleet in shifts and going for pressure instead of trying to avoid light spots.

While we started out slowly, we had the third best day of the fleet on Sunday, and other teams were congratulating us on sailing well. After 11 races we were only 7 points out of our goal of mid-fleet, and averaged only 2 places behind the second place team. Only the winning team avoided a finish in the bottom half of the fleet, and every team had a finish in the top three. I was just happy to have lead a couple of races and been in the mix.

I could not have done this event without my awesome crew and friends Chip Till and Chris Calhoun, nor without the support of the Carolina Yacht Club, SAYRA, and US Sailing's Area D.

Weekend of Sailing

Disappointing turnout for fall series. Beautiful day on the water. Steady NE wind at 15 knots.

Match race for 2 lightnings , 2 sunfish, and 3 lasers. Though a small group , they made up

for it in enthusiasm. Thanks to the sailors who came out to play.

Sunday's UNCW collegiate regatta was awesome. Sustained winds of over 20 knots with gusts to 30. 9 schools competed which equals 36 kids. Lots of swimming, but the sailors learned to

handle the conditions as time wore on. Thanks to Rick Campbell and the local college kids for

running some great races. Congrats to C of C for winning the event.

Should have some pictures coming shortly.

Up the road at Lake Norman CYC's team of Paul Whitesides, Chip Till and Chris Calhoun took

on some of the nations best sailors at the US Sailing Men's Championship. Each day was a better day for the CYC team staying in the top third of the fleet the last day of sailing with a second place finish in their column. Thanks to Lake Norman for hosting this high level event.

Hopefully will post a regatta report from the team.

MALLORY'S

CYC team will be competing for the Mallory Cup this weekend at Lake Norman. This is the US men's championship. Paul Whitesides, Chip Till and Chris Calhoun will be sailing in Ultimate 20's after securing a spot by winning a qualifier in Charleston Harbor earlier in the year.

Amazingly the James Match was completed yesterday.
Bad weather was everywhere, but Banks Channel gave us around 7-12 knots of wind a just
a periodic sprinkle.

CYC Regatta Week Friday

Despite very difficult weather conditions the first SAYRA Youth Match Race completed

a full round robin. The first flight of the day was abandoned when lightning interrupted sailing.

Unsettled weather continued until a reasonable seabreeze filled in the afternoon.

Congratulations to Brad Milliken and Cooper Paiva of winning the event in a tiebreaker with Parks Blair and Brendan Bennett.

Think the kids had a good time racing in the match race format.

Lots of smiles.

Using format of the James Match. Have 6 junior crews with plans to do a double round robin.

Event fully umpired. Will try to run close to the CYC pier so come down and watch these very

CYC SC REGATTA DAY ONE

Crazy day.

Very hot with 0 wind to start the day.

Seabreeze comes up late and off we go.

Nice breeze for race 1.

Looking ok as we go up 2nd windward , then vang breaks and boom points skyward.

Same time thunder comes from the bridge. Cant go to CYC - thats where thunderstorm is

going. James Island not good - we are at about dead low tide. Chill out and just rerun the

entire vang - almost good as new and now ready for race 2. See the Lightnings heading to CYC as well as the E scows and J's. However looks like its clearing and course B might keep on sailing.

Then Boom another thunder clap. We are all waved in. Chaos at the dock as all try to go in at once.

Will call it a one day regatta - forecast for more of the same tomorrow with blistering heat index.

Just cant tolerate that heat as well as in the past.

Of note, Greg Zack got a bullet for the race of the day in the laser fulls - ahead of a lot of good sailors. Eddie Nowell got 4th. Good luck to those guys tomorrow.

Very tough night tuesday. Very light winds with huge shift from the east. Thanks

Funsail tonight , fun as usual. Great barbecue and Blue Ribbon after racing. Stayed til dark.

Light , fluky winds were awaiting the sailors for the first Ocean Race / Dorman Cup Regatta on Saturday , May 21st . As race 1 progressed , the wind went lighter and left , allowing the Lightning fleet to just barely finish before the wind died , and then filled back in with a nice sea breeze for the next two races . Thanks to the skillful weather mark work of Sterling Powell , the RC was able to shorten the race for the Laser class after three legs ., The saying goes , that if you want something done , you ask a busy man . And that's what we did . We were very fortunate to have Sterling and Bob Thomson on the course working the marks for us . Bob Martin and Mike Norris kept us together on Signal all day .
The Dorman Cup is awarded to the winner of the lasgest fleet to compete , and this year it was the Lightning fleet , with nine boats .
Congratulations to the Barden / Van Arsdale boat , who finished first overall on 1-3-1 finishes . Jim Harris was second with 3 -5-2 finishes , followed by Bob Cowen with 4-2-5 finishes .

Seven Lasers came to the line . Martin Willard , with 3-1-3 finishes edged out Eddie Nowell on a tie breaker for first place , and Rob Freschette was third .
The next Ocean race is scheduled for Saturday , June 18 th , with the first warning flag at 1200 . Hope to see you there

FIRST OCEAN RACE - DORMAN CUP

CHARLESTON RACE WEEK FRIDAY

Lots of mayhem on Charleston Harbor today. Chip Till and Paul Whitesides ran aground and broke a lot of parts but they are still way up there in the j24 fleet.

Bob Cowen had a very close encounter with another J24 - the other boat coming in to their cockpit. Asked if they got any pictures - but they were in survival mode.

On the Melges course the pin boat operators were routinely tagged by boats starting and finishing.

Super aggressive sailing in what must be the biggest regatta on the East Coast.

After a few Dark and Stormy's everybody is happy.

Except for the guys yelling at each other outside of the Protest Room #2

Not sure how many protest rooms they have.

Forecast is for gusts to 39 knots tomorrow . Maybe a lay day.

CYC well represented at the first D12 Laser Event in Beaufort , SC. We represented 4 of the 7 out of town sailors in full rigs. Martin took 5th place and Eddie took 6th. Lots of swimming , but the water is warmer down there. Lots of tacking up the left side of the course to get out of the current. Lots of running aground. Some collisions. Some expletives. The dinner was excellent. Huge pieces of roast beef . Had a good bottle of wine. Thanks to Butch , John and the BYSC crew.

3-18 St Pete

High pressure is camped on us so we have 3 knots or less out of the SE. not a good thing. The RC postponed ashore for 4 hours. I did some blogging reports and got up to date but my #$%! Road runner would not send. We were also postponed indefinitely all afternoon. Washed the boat, argued with the laptop dysfunctional email. Visited the rum party on the main dock SPYC marina and hung out with the NC group: Richard, Mickey, Jack Sawyer, Doug & Katy Sherwood, Rick Essman, John Pelosi and Toby Wells. First time in memory of not getting on the water to sail at St Pete.

Mickey & Richard provided the before dinner hospitality suite in their room complete with hors d’oeuvres borrowed from the Hampton Inn lobby.

Rick is from St Pete, provided great local knowledge for our group, and lead us to a good restaurant a few blocks away for dinner.

We all hope for wind tomorrow.

3-19 St Pete

We are still without wind, 3 knots or less out of the SE. Not a good thing. The RC postponed ashore for 4 hours again this morning. So the NC group and our guide Rick hit the road for Fort Desoto beach. Most of us took a swim, the water is a bit chilly even down here, but it was beautifully clear water. Did some beach walking, not as may shells as Masonboro.

Returned to St Pete and hour before this AP ended to visit the Saturday Street Fair / Market just a few blocks from SPYC. Great food, music, arts & crafts, loads of friendly dogs and people. Happens every Saturday between October & May . We highly recommend it.

Sailing is still stalled due to light wind. The NC group decides to go out anyway for a little light air practice, and we had a pretty good sail with about 10 other boats also out on the water. The RC and the rest of the 57 boat fleet arrived around 3pm and the light wind died. So we waited as the late day breeze finally filled in for one short race. We finished 28^th Richard 29^th, so we drive 13 hours, spend a bunch of $, sail in a 57 boat fleet and we could still spit on each other as we finish. So…… it must be some sort of CYC magnetic force at work?

The warning signal tomorrow has been moved up an hour to 9 am to attempt more races before the start time limit on a final day of regatta, so we have a really early morning ahead of us. Tomorrow will go on well into Monday early morning as we pack up the boat after racing and drive through to Wilmington non-stop.

This is a very beautiful, sunny place, clear water, wonderful skyline, we enjoyed being out on the water but did not sail well. Some interesting participants are doing the circuit this year.

The team next to us in the boat yard is from Columbia, sailing on mountain lakes, some having an elevation of 9,000 ft above sea level. (Denver is at 5,000) Teams from Mexico, Chile & Argentina are also here.

I arrived around 1pm on Monday and lightning friends helped with removing the bottom cover and stepping the mast. My rock star crew AKA Becky Sawyer and Jack Sawyer will arrive by limo from MIA later tonight.

Tuesday; Lots of frustration on the boat today with the Sawyer team, our decisions did not fare well and we had horrible finishes in all three races today. Wind was ESE all day 12 mph in the morning dropping as low as 5mph in the afternoon. One of those conditions where the morning breeze left a choppy condition as the wind speed dropped. Made some modifications to the boat after racing, showers, dinner at Coral Reef YC featuring Lightning sailors of all ages stepping out with hoola hoops, cold beer, a night of sleep and we will try again tomorrow.

3-16 Miami

Light air again today. After fighting with the traveler control crossing the boat for a few days I finally removed it, this old dog was doing fine without it, and I’ve tripped up on it for the last time. Drilling two holes in the deck stressed out the crew and neighbors but, as explained by Becky, I do it all the time, just part of getting to know the boat well.

We set the bar really low yesterday , we have nothing to protect, nothing to lose. Planned our start to assume a mid line sag and it worked. Got a good start with speed and clear air. We choose to minimize tacks today and continued left up the first beat. Looking OK at the weather mark, but it is amazing how the fleet collapses back in on the first mark, near the front is a big advantage, we are not quite there and have disturbed air. Did OK downwind choosing to round the less crowded left gate mark. Continued up the left with a few other poor soles, who like us lost many, many boats as the right side worked. Re-learn tactics 101: late in the race, splitting with the fleet is a low percentage option, hang with the fleet , get the same wind they get.

So the bar is still low enough for my Basset hound to walk over.

Packed up the boat, cleaned up and headed to South Beach to see the Latest Frank Gehry building, the New Symphony Hall. Very cool, tonights free outdoor movie projected huge on the wall and well attended is Avatar, starts at 8pm, pre movie entertainment: drinks at Maxine’s bistro with the occasional earth Avatar trolling by.

The movie scene was amazing and hard to leave, but we need food and a visit to Berries on 27^th before leaving Miami.

3-17 Going to St Pete

We are happy to report that the alligators along alligator alley appear to be doing fine. Becky wants me to slow down for a longer look. But we are on a mission to raise the bar.

Fleet 511 Cape Fear paid its dues thanks to Richard Waldkirch, me & new boat owner Rick Essman . When you see Rick, give him $5. Richard and I are in the construction industry, are therefore broke, and could only cough up $5 each, so Rick added $15.

Looks like this entire circuit is going to be a light air series, Toby Wells is with us for St Pete and is in the cat bird seat due to the low bar thing. According to Toby, I have done a great job of setting the stage for a brilliant performance which occurs upon his arrival.

Laura Jeffers Circuit Organizer extraordinaire, master of activities, her minute to win it team and competitors entertained us all. I did catch 8 pencils at 59 seconds, but not 12. I think my performance was affected by the Malibo Breezes, if you can’t see the pencils you can catch them.

J24's on Lake Lanier

The District 8 J/24 Circuit kicked off it's 2011 Season this past weekend at Lake Lanier Sailing Club just north of Atlanta, GA. A group of (14) boats were in attendance made up of a strong local contingency including (2) Teams from Georgia Tech in addition to several out of town traveling boats from Burlington/Goldsboro/Wrightsville Beach-NC and Columbia/Hilton Head-SC. RC was able to get (6) great races off and it ended up with James Howard on "Classic" and Chip Till on "Murder Incorporated/Team Layline" knotted at the top...in the end the tie-breaker fell James' way! Next J/24 District 8 Circuit event in June 11-12 at the "J/24 Coastal Invitational" in Oriental, NC.

It's Time

Time to start the sailing season. Hear the lasers might go offshore and practice this weekend.

Time to check the RC Equipment. Just have to get to the dock box with no ramp.

Next Week John Sawyer begins his journey on another Southern Circuit Tour - first stop Savannah.

Less than a month from now 10-15 505's will be racing in the ocean. If you cant get on the water, go sit up on the porch and watch these crazy guys sail.

In two months CYC will also host the Laser ACC's. Looks like a good contingent from Canada will make their way south and our hot junior sailors from SAYRA will try to defend their home turf - or make that surf.

So hold on to your hats, the big seabreeze is coming.

Looks like a bunch of CYC'ers are in a caravan to Hilton Head for the SAYRA convention.

Mother Nature said no to sailing yesterday. Steady rain and mid 40's all day. Some hardy souls showed up but they - and the RC - were happy not enough sailors arrived to set up some racing.

Congratulations to Greg Zack for winning the Laser Class, Bill Raney for winning the Sunfish Class and Paul Whitesides for winning the Lightning Class. Paul got Richard in a tie breaker.

So that brings 2010 to a close at CYC.

But hey - the lasers usually do something on New Years Day - so only 3 weeks without some sailing going on. Some exciting stuff on tap for 2011. The 505 class will be sailing in the ocean the first weekend in April. The Laser Class will be doing the Laser ACC's April 30th, May 1st. And look out old guys , that good group of juniors we have will be another year older.

The promising forecast did not come true today. Light air, heavy current and big shifts were the rule. The 3rd and final race of the day finally got the boats moving. But it was a pretty day and definitely warmer than advertised. Chek the results here and in the sidebar.

MIDLANDS 3

Fun in Columbia. Last day below freezing while rigging up. Flipped over in first race. Hands numb up the first windward leg. Caught up despite the autotack flip but ended up in a big hole on the right. Took third despite lots of mistakes. Sugar is a good boat.

Jim Harris took third in the Lightning fleet. Trey Carraway sailed with John Pelosi in that fleet as well.

Chase Carraway took 2nd in opti white with Scott Harris not far behind in 5th

Jim Harris and crew took a bullet and a 2nd in the Lightning fleet.
The author took first in the first race in the laser fleet = subsequently became overconfidant for the next 2 races.

Columbia Sailing Club is putting on a great regatta to finish the year off.

Fall #1 sailed today in about 12-15 knots of NE breeze. Nice angle for banks channel.
5 Races sailed - the last one was a bit lighter. Was great to see Jimmy Carter and Bill Raney
match racing their sunfish.

Ocean 4

Finished up the 2010 season with a great day on the ocean. Forecast was for no more than 10 knots but the sailors were treated with up to 20 knots and some nice waves. Speaking of waves - there were some huge ones just south of the inlet some of the laser sailors tested out after the regatta. Check the Ocean Series results on the sidebar and the pictures below.

Rob McEachern won the event with 4 sailors tied for 2nd.

Congratulations to Parks Blair and his crew Brendan Bennett for winning the event with a tie breaker in the last race of the day. Exciting stuff.

JO'S REPORT:

Eight competitors and crews gathered for the 39th James Match Race on Saturday August 28th . The all day event is a single round robin race with on- the- water umpires . The Club's 420's were used , and to level the playing field even more , the competitors rotated through each of the boats . This eliminates the chance of being assigned a boat that is exceptionally fast , or slow . So the only variable , as they say , is the nut on the end of the tiller .

This years list of competitors were , Paul Whitesides ,Martin Willard , Pierce Barden , Bill Smith ,Bill Raney , Glenn Walker , Parks Blair , and Tommy Allen .

By the end of the 6th round , or flight , the math was done , and there remained only two competitors and crews who were in the running : Bill Smith and his crew Tom had 6 points , undefeated to that point ; Parks Blair and his crew Brendan Bennett had 5 points. And the two teams were slated to face each other in the 7th flight . So if Bill Smith won , he would be the undefeated champ . If Parks won , he and Bill would be tied on total points for the day . In this match race , the tiebreaker is determined by who beat who in their individual match.

And so , it came down to the wire , with Parks winnning the start . Bill fought back , but Parks never let go of his very narrow lead , all the way to a very close finish .

Congratulations to Parks and Brendan on a great job on the water !

Great day on the ocean. Sustained 14-18 with 20+ gusts. Some very big waves out there.

Here's JO's report:

Sailboat racing is 90 % mental . The other half is physical . Yesterday , for Ocean 3 , it was the other way around.

Usually we select a day like yesterday ( winds SW 19 - 24 kts , 4 foot seas , serious lumps ) for the season opener . It's a gear-busting , gut wrenching , get - all -of- those- winter cobwebs-out -of - the-way type of race that makes you wonder where you left your golf clubs anyway . This season we waited for Ocean 3 . The good news- you have 3 weeks to fix everything before the SAYRA Regatta , August 7-8 th. ( Need to sign up soon for that )

Think Billy King's Fun Meter was hovering around the #4 hash mark after the second race . It was good to see Eddie Nowell and Rick Campbell on the starting line yesterday , first time this season , hope that didn't scare yall off .

Can't say enough good things about my RC out there , Sterling Powell ,Bob Thomson , Jay Stokley , and David Nance expertly running mark boats , with Arland Whitesides and Jesse Shumway ( Chicago YC ) on Signal .

Congrats to Pierce Barden , Steve Johnston , and Richard Waldkirch in the Lightning fleet , top 3 finishers for the day yesterday; congrats to Martin Willard , Greg Zack and Glenn Walker for their top 3 finishes yesterday in the Laser class .

Next Ocean Race is a ways off ( Sept 18th ) when we plan to have a J 24 fleet joining us .

PRO race report:

A different kind of day on the ocean today . Very light SE winds with a leftover swell fron the E and very large cumulus clouds looming on the horizon . First time in recent years that boats had to be towed out against a surging incoming tide . Gotta check that calendar next year .

One race started and done , congratulations to Jim Harris , Richard Waldkirch , and John Sawyer for their 1,2,3 place finishes respectively .

In the Laser class , congrats to Martin Willard , Glen Walker , and John Overton for their 1,2,3 place finished respectively .

Thanks to the fine work of David Nance and Braxton James , a shorter -than- normal course was skillfully shortened to a finish at the second weather mark . Great RC team work all the way around , with Bob Thomson multitasking at Pin , Leeward , Finish , and getting the right flags to the shortened finish :) PRO thinks he must have maldistributed the gear this morning . RC abandoned the scheduled second & third races , just as thunder started rumbling on the western horizon . Must have been interesting sailing into the inlet and into the teeth of a huge thunderhead . Fortunately for us , the thunderhead drifted to Carolina Beach and all its teeth fell out .

Next Ocean Race is July 17th , hope to see you there.

May 8th was the kickoff for the Ocean Series and the Dorman Cup . This year there were 8 Lightnings and 9 Lasers that made it to the noon start off the CYC .

Three races were run in winds that started at 12- 15 and steadily built to 18 , gusting to 20 at the end of the third race Sterling Powell , David Nance , and Bob Thomson in their mark boats ,set an excellent windward leeward race course , about 0.7 miles in length

Congratulations go to Pierce Barden on finishing first on the day in Lightnings with 1 , 2, 1 finishes.

Second in Lightnings was Steve Johnston , with 3,1,4 results .

Third place for the day went to Chris Stone / Billy King with 5,4,2 finishes .

In the Laser fleet , Martin Willard took first place on 2,1,1 finishes .

John Overton came in second with a 1,2,3 for the day .

Glen Walker took third place with 5,3,2 finishes .

Many thanks to the fine RC work on the Signal Boat from Jay Stokely , Mike Norris , and Jenny Blair .

John and Becky's adventure continues

Thursday: Alligator Alley

The drive over from Miami only involved one argument with the GPS lady but that was the last straw the Brit is now an American. The highlight was the alligators sunning, as Becky says whole families were hangin out. The road side is fenced to keep them off the road when gators get on the road they assume the temperature of the road and go to sleep, fences are a great idea for all of us along alligator alley.

Arrived in St Pete at 2:30 and set up the boat. Fixed a few more things, shopped for groceries and arrived at the club for the competitors meeting and general meeting. Paid fleet 511’s dues again this year, will try to remember to collect this summer. The annual meeting is followed by a potato bar, drink bar and welcoming party at St Pete. Two or three races are planned for tomorrow, but we are under a high pressure and it is not hot enough the produce a sea breeze so the chance is there for a land breeze , sea breeze conflict resulting in little wind.

Staying at the Ponce de Leon hotel for about the 5^th time. It is old but renovated with funky 1930s bathrooms & stuff that does not work half the time; but we love it, the owner / manager is in this hotel for life. The best thing about the Ponce is that it is next door to St Pete and relatively inexpensive. When here, we park the car and walk to everything. 53 boats are registered, and our RC is one of the best.

No Wind

No wind today.
On to St Pete.
Here is John's last installment :

Yes we did race.

Tuesday: Sailed three races in Biscayne Bay, beautiful skyline in the background, tropical waters. 41 boats sailed, our finishes were 19,27,14. We finished 19^th overall. First race was in about 8-9 very shifty out of the NNW. Second race was also very shifty with some dead spots. Third race was in the sequence and then postponed due to a wind shift that made the line and first beat poor for the competitors, this happened twice. Race three also had one general recall, we were losing the afternoon, the RC finally got the race started under the black flag, 5 or 6 were over early and DSQ’d. A big shift on the second downwind leg surprisingly did not warrant a course change by the RC and the final windward leg was also a reach, unusual at this racing level.

Even though my crew slandered me and besmirched my stellar reputation in the previous posting, I bought drinks for my crew at the club tiki bar tonight, fortunately we were tired and only had a few drinks. Tomorrow is ladies lunch day at CRYC we have been advised that parking will be limited. Looking forward to mingling with the ladies. Becky says I’ve got it wrong.

Wednesday: Arrived at CRYC at 8am to make some rig adjustments. Weather is overcast light wind, Most boats were launched by stood by for a possible postpone ashore. AP did happen and the wait for wind was on, light rain and no wind persisted all morning, at about 11:30 the RC abandoned the remaining races.

Lessons learned: when the breeze is manageable for you and your crew, with effort you can keep the boat flat, and water is not smooth. The skipper and crew need to move their weight in the boat to kept it flat, steering up, pointing higher to keep it flat is not the way to go.

Johns story for the day:

Sunday: Got out of Savannah a little early and stopped at West Marine to replace some of the stuff that is now at the bottom of the Skidaway River. Fortunately none of the sacred parts like mast blocks are missing, if that were the case we would have to do a voodoo ritual, incense etc. to make new mast block that were eggzackly right. Drove as long as possible, had an Italian dinner in a restaurant next to the roadside hotel. Me and a few bikers and a lot of restaurant employees.

Monday: More driving, my GPS wanted me to take toll roads to Miami, I did not agree and we argued several times about it. She is British, I thought maybe a

Proper brit would be more respectful of my wishes but at every possible interchange she would demand that I exit I 95. I finally gave in.

By the way following my British lady through the Miami interchanges was a joke. Arrived at Coral Reef YC late morning and settled in to my spot with the boat. Had a glorious day of fixing stuff on the boat, meeting lightning sailors originally from Australia then Nigeria and now Houston. Coral Reef YC is great , warm and sunny. Crewed for a new Lightning owner in on the water coaching this afternoon in about 15-16 wind, coached by Skip Diebold. I knew I was in trouble when I noticed no vang on the boat, flashback to Savannah, being the guy on the boat with experience, I forced my host into rigging the vang before leaving the harbor.

Retrieved my rock star crew, Becky and son Jack at Miami Airport. This arrangement promises to buy me several get out of Becky jail cards.

Monday (crew version): Late pickup at Miami International. Some excuse about “helping some guy with his vang”. Captain smells like rum and has glitter on his pants. We see a “Gold Club” valet ticket on the dash. Crew has suspicions but we stay quiet. Next stop: the Miami equivalent of the “Heart of Charleston” hotel. Dinner from the vending machine as the captain rants about some Fireball race from the 80’s. I imagine the captain will be ornery tomorrow and want to re-rig the entire boat. Better get some shut-eye…

Tuesday: Our regatta registration includes a big hot breakfast followed by the competitors meeting, racing starts at 11am, three races today.

I’m a little wiped out, but here goes. Around 30 boats participated in this first leg of the southern circuit, that’s lower than normal. The big question was where’s the heat. It was freakin cold Sunday morning. This leg is only 3 races, Saturday wind was SW at 16 gust to 20. Lots of carnage unfortunately. 9 boats capsized including yours truly. Our dirty deed as we call it happened in the second race final downwind run. We still don’t know why for sure, but after getting upright the spreader was severely bent and the vang broken. The safety crew gave us second place to Tommy Allen for time to get back up, Tommy sail out of his capsize and finished mid fleet. New mast tubes are always on the lawn at Savannah Yacht Club, they are not free replacements but if you travel from Canada as some have for the southern circuit and you break your mast it’s good. One broken mast was replaced, three tubes are left. Tom Allen had a few spare spreaders and the part I needed to fix the vang so by 7pm I was back together. Except for the all the #*!()&%$ stuff that came out of the boat when we capsized.

The club roasted oysters for dinner Moose tried to work a deal for snottier oysters , that’s his way of saying not cooked so long. Appetizing thought, and I watched my NC State lose to George Tech with a bunch of GT fans to complete the day from hell.

Sunday: Even the snowbirds are complaining. The wind has not layed down and it is about 50 degrees. I decided not to sail which my crew, shivering with hot coffee in hand loved hearing, they would have sailed but I just did not want to risk another day of damage, within 30 minutes I regretted not sailing. My crew and I assisted on safety boats. Watching the race from the weather mark, the current effect was very interesting. I actually learn some things. The wind did drop and only one boat broke down. If you go to sail, SAIL.

From our district Will Tyner and crew were outstanding, they won the second race and were top ten for all races.

Florida Masters

Sailed a radial on Saturday. 8ft swell running from the east, with a west wind anywhere from 10 to 25 knots. Kept up until the lulls hit. Did not flip over in those shark infested waters. Felt bad about my finishes until saw Dick Tillman was just a little ahead. With 9am start on Sunday at 40 degrees with 35 degree windchill decided to sleep in - also wanted to beat the traffic out of Daytona Beach - what a race that was. Laser Masters sailing is still the best.

Paul Whitesides and I have my J/24 team down here in Tampa for J/24 Mid-Winters. 3 races-our finishes were 21, 3, 8. 35 boats- we're in 10th but will drop the 21. Light NW breeze.

JOHN SAWYER LEADS NINE BOATS TO SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

John Sawyer from Carolina Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, NC topped a field of nine Lightnings to win the 2009 Traveling Series Championship. John combined second place finishes at the District Championships, Southern Open, and Wrightsville Regatta with a fourth place at Augusta and a first place at Beaufort to win the series with a low score of 3.000.

Tough day on the water for sailors and RC. Very light WSW breeze for the first 2 races but fortunately a decent seabreeze filled in for the third race. Tune in later for detailed description of what makes a seabreeze do its thing. Pierce Barden topped the lightning fleet. Martin Willard edged out Greg Zack for top laser. Check the side bar for results and pictures. Will post a short video shortly as well.

Over the past week we completed Sound 2, Ocean 2 and the ever popular funsail.
Glenn Walker posted 3 bullets to take Ocean 2 in the Laser fleet. Jim Harris and crew dominated the Lightining fleet as well. Beautiful day on the ocean. Thanks to Jim Overton and his faithful race committee. Posted the results of the Ocean Series and the Lighting District event in the sidebar.

Invitations to this years James Match are in the mail. If any of you want to apply as a wildcard turn your application in to the CYC office. There were 2 wildcard spots last year. The event will be held in our club 420's again this year.

CYC impressed 95 laser sailors this past week. Big waves, good wind, extremely competitive sailing, open bar, multiple prizes, great food. Most of all the sailors appreciated CYC's southern hospitality. Thanks to the club for letting us hold such events. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the event possible. Beautiful day on the ocean. Increasing wind and waves for the 3 completed races. Sterling RC work by Jim Overton and his crew. Martin Willard grabbed 3 bullets and won the Dorman Cup for most boats. Pierce Barden had 3 bullets to win the lightning fleet. Results posted on sidebar.

Southeastern District Championship 2009 Columbia Sailing Club

April 25-26

Four boats from CYC traveled to Lake Murray, Pierce Barden, John Sawyer, Richard Waldkirch and Paul Whitesides sailing Martha Fisher’s boat.

Columbia is centrally located in the district and has hosted the championship for past two years. 15 boats competed. Next year it is moving to the coast.

This year, lack of wind was the big deal, ironically it had blown hard for days leading up to the weekend, and the forecast was good but …….

Our local band of travelers camped along the lake in a great spot, with Richard’s crew Mickey Southerland taking the award for the most refined accommodation. Mickey’s camping ensemble is truly a thing of beauty. Standing room tent, sleeping cot with duvet’, pillow with special meaning, side table, reading lamp, area rug. He does not have a CD player but just turns the one up in the truck. He is the senior member of the tribe so we don’t say anything about the music.

Paul Whitesides and Martha Fisher have Martha’s grandfather’s boat (George Fisher was a great lightning sailor, and Martha must be genetically pre-positioned because she sails very well.) The boat has big history. Paul put a lot of TLC in the boat this winter it looks great and goes fast.

Saturday started with light wind dropping off mid afternoon to nothing but then coming back up late around 4pm and solid all night, what’s that about? The locals said this was normal, maybe we could race at night? The first race was very bad for team Sawyer we could never break out and all the zephyrs bypassed us. Fortunately the race was discarded for being shortened to only two legs, note to PRO’s, three is the class minimum.

Race two started as the wind was coming back. We noticed more wind on the left side near the dam rounded the first mark 3 or 4 and after five legs finished third. Rum drinks on shore were promised so we all sailed hard for the club. I don’t take beer on the boat so my crew situation was getting a little testy.

Life on the porch overlooking the lake, Mickey’s music in the background, rum drink in hand is not bad, and the breeze was so steady.

Sunday; we have one race in the can so we have a lot to do today. The wind has dropped off but the air feels dryer and colder, good signs. We sailed four races today, race 2 &3 in 6-8 mph wind, team Sawyer did well finishing 2 and 1. So we are at a total of 6 points and no one near. Race 4 we are dreading, wind has dropped to 3mph and is looking to go to nothing. We finished 12^th. Lesson learned, minimize tacks, and don’t sail out on the corner chasing wind certainly when you are in first place. Basically we sailed far right into better wind on the downwind leg but the wind filled in from the left and lifted the fleet to the mark. The RC shorten course to a very short third leg weather mark. End of story.

Wind was again on the lake so race five was sailed. We rounded back in the fleet at the first mark probably due to thinking about race 4. Got our heads back on the downwind runs and got in good pressure and in phase with the wind shifts arriving 3^rd at last bottom mark with Paul and Martha close behind. Pierce leading the race and Terry Tyner in second both were out of range so we worked with Paul, maintained a lose cover and finished 3^rd. We both actually closed on the leaders.

Race 4 put us in second with Terry Tyner from Columbia winning. The Wilmington boats were very competitive with all four boats finishing in the top six places. Good sailing.

SILVER AND MASTERS COUNTDOWN

CYC sailors have been busy picking up silver at various regattas. Chip Till along with Paul Whitesides, Becky Nygren , Emily Aspland and Matias Heinrich took first in the J24 class at Charleston Raceweek - good job guys. Results here.

Laser Sailors already have 2 district events under their belts. In Beaufort , SC Martin Willard took 2nd and Glenn Walker took 4th place. Results and photos here. At Lake Norman Martin picked up another 2nd place trophy. Results on the D12 website here.

On another note the Laser Masters NA's are less than a month away. 63 sailors are already pre-registered and we have quite an international flavor. Check the Website here to see who's coming.
