Team Sawyer Day 2 - St Pete

Started race 5 on time at 10am, to make that we get up at 6:30 -7 am, load the cooler get a sub from publixs , get breakfast, hoist the boat in and sail out about 40 min.  A front is coming in already the sky is dark to the west.  Race abandoned before anyone gets to the weather mark.  Sailed in with thunder and lightning nearby.  On shore the RC postponed until tomorrow at 10.

Dan & Jackson are die hard Duke fans so I m forced to tolerate the afternoon in the St Pete bar watching Duke try to make it to the sweet 16.

Wind prediction tomorrow is 18-20.  A long day that will include the drive home.

Team Sawyer Day 1 Southern Circuit St Pete

 Day one St Pete.

46 boats.  The pre race mentor talk explained tide and current in the part of Tampa bay where we race.  Wind should clock right all day , we have wind this morning from the correct direction so we are not postponed.  Race 1, 10mph SSW.  Dan &Jackson Morton are on for this regatta.  We have some team work to improve. We improved with each race.  Finishes: 34 after taking a 20% penalty before a protest hearing .In the first race we entered the weather mark zone on port could not complete our tack before forcing a boat on starboard to alter course above close hauled.  We did not hear "protest" on the water but knowing the other party he is unlikely to be faking it.  We improved all day : 21,19,16.

Class party tonight on the docks in the marina.  We are taking dark & stormys to share.

Took some photos from the boat.  See Below!

John Sawyers post from Day 3 Southern Circuit Miami

The RC got off two races today in 7-10 mph wind out of the ENE.
The class is running a mentoring program for the circuit and we signed up.  Al Turhune was our mentor and helped us get better starts, we still suck, but now in 2 out of 5 starts we are not trashed.  De-breifings by the leaders also occurred before launching each day.

Racing today really scrambled the results.  Tito Gonzales , Chili, won.  Tito is a very humble, he sailed with his son, probably 18 yrs old, and a girl friend of his son who had not sailed on a lighting.  In the photos, Tito is bow# 01, because he won the circuit last year. Spinnaker is the Chilean flag design.

Last year in St Pete we gave Tito a ride to claim his car from a towing company,
He had parked it in the Publics grocery store lot for days.  Tito owns the largest pig farm in Chili.

We feel good about our sailing.  Dan Morton & his son Jackson join me in St Pete tomorrow,  Becky says they have big shoes to fill. Dan says he will not be suckered into talking about how big Becky's feet are.  And so it goes ,always fun.

John Sawyer Report from Southern Circuit Day 2 - Miami

-----------

Following my first post my crew demanded editorial rights ?  The bit about plants really did it.   So, a few details :  We won the drawing for the best boat space and are #1 at the hoist, so easy.   Wind yesterday was 170 - 180 ,  10 mph race 1, 12-15 race 2, 15-17 race 3.  Today is starting very light we are postponed ashore 1 hour.

Four races today. 170 180 & 160. Race 4 ,7-10; Race 5, 7-10; race 6 ,10-12; race 7, 14-18.   Our finishes, 11,28,15,17 Weather leg is .8 to 1 mile. 50 minute races.  Our race 2 start was terrible and we tried to get left in too much bad air.  At the hoist out ,Becky found a way to spray the bottom and "accidentally" spray me as well. Going up the beat. Many are over standing the mark due to current.

Dinner at CRYC tonight.  Light air forecast.  In the boat lot photo we are bow 35.

Regatta Report from Southern Circuit in Miami from John Sawyer
Day 1

Lightning Class Savants

Coconut Grove and the Coral Reef YC are beautiful and Tropical.  Our NC house plants thrive outdoors and become tree like here.  The Lightning fleet is smaller this year 32 boats unfortunately the boats we seldom if ever beat are here.  Our finishes : 27, 25.5 & 18.  The after racing debrief from those at the front revealed that somehow they saw the left side with good pressure and flatter water but only in the top half of the weather leg.  Will ask tomorrow how they see that.  I think they are savants.

A few photos are attached,  manatee in the marina, a few of the Biscayne bay views.
